Giuseppe Penone

As part of the Arte Povera movement, Penone was a pioneer in addressing the relationship between man and nature.

The iconic sculpture made in 1968 entitled It Will Continue to Grow Except at That Point shows a bronze hand grasping around the trunk of a tree, thereby limiting the tree from growing as the title also indicates. The work pushes us to understand man’s effect on nature and thus to treat it with respect. In a time of heated debates about global warming, climate refugees, and the melting of the polar ice, Penone’s message is that of a quiet and contemplative one, whereby the small actions and a change of mindset in meeting nature is the beginning.
