12.00–14.00: Musical performance by Elina Waage Mikalsen & music workshop at Sliperiloftet

Elina Waage Mikalsen is one of the artists in the Springbrett 2025 exhibition Ring of Fire. Her installation Áhcagastá Tales of the Ember, 2022 is on view in Nybruket’s second floor at Kistefos until the season closes on 12 October. The multi-component work investigates chapters of Sámi history and cosmology through the lens of fire. Its formal and storytelling elements consist of an intricate pattern of intertwined woolen threads – inspired by Sámi weaving traditions – duodji pieces, a sound composition and a publication. Through the delicate tension between the materials, the work emphasises the importance of balance, metaphorically and materially: fire is a prerequisite for life in the north, but it can also burn.

As a musician and sound artist, weaving is also a central reference to Elina Waage Mikalsen. She has created an instrument from her áhkku’s (grandmother’s) old weaving tool – a suohponstuolet to bring out the sound of a material and spirit. With this, her voice and more, Waage Mikalsen is known for her improvised sets where she creates sonic spaces that dwell somewhere in between reality and fantasy, and which approach temporality as a circular concept rather than a linear one.

The event is free for all visitors with a museum ticket. Children and young people up to the age of 19 always enjoy free admission to Kistefos.
