Hypnos Descending is painted with letters and text fragments. The artwork is based on a self-written poem with the same title:
sweet droning, sweet dream / late evening, or so it would seem /
I never thought. never thought I would / the witchery of dry white wine / slow moving stillness of syrupy time / early morning sunrise /
or so it would seem / I didn’t think. didn’t think we could
Experiments with texts and fonts are at the core of Magne Furuholmen's extensive production. The letters appear in some circumstances alone, while in others they form whole sentences that are taken out of a larger context – in this case, a poem. The text is painted directly onto the burned clay or scraped out of the shiny glaze. The flowing handwriting creates an exciting contrast to the pronounced block letters against the white background. Colors are otherwise kept in black, gray and brown hues; earth tones that blend with the jar’s surroundings at Kistefos.
