LANGUAGE + THE MATERIALS REFERRED TO

Lawrence Weiner was an American conceptual artist. He was one of the central figures in the formation of conceptual art in the 1960s. His work often took the form of typographic texts, a form of word art.

Weiner visited Kistefos in the winter of 2016 and prepared four new texts, especially for Kistefos. His text-based work is installed on 2 façades of the Kistefoss II waterworks and is a direct response to Kistefos’ rich industrial history. That Weiner worked so site-specifically was a rarity, as throughout his 60-year career he has accrued a large number of slogans that can be adapted to different situations and places.

The sculpture is gratefully acquired with thanks to a generous donation from Kistefos AS and will become the 47th work in the permanent collection at Kistefos.
