Time

The design, the woman and the tree, can be seen as an allegory of the title, Time. The female is the one creating new life and the tree is in many cases an image of time. The tree has also been used as a symbol of the continuation of life, for example through the metaphor ’tree of life’.

The sculpture’s surface is alternately rough and smooth, and this creates an interesting contrast between light and shadow. The woman looks as if she is growing out the stone, and the artist has deliberately left parts of the sculpture to appear crude and raw.
